beach weekend essentials

There's a version of packing for a beach weekend where you bring everything and spend the whole drive down reorganizing your bag in your head. And then there's the version where you've done this enough times to know exactly what matters and what's just taking up space.

This is the second version.

A really good tote. Big enough to hold a towel, a book, sunscreen, and whatever bev and snack combo you picked up at the gas station. Doesn't have to be precious — actually better if it isn't. Clip something gold onto the strap and it looks like you tried without trying.

SPF you'll actually reapply.

A good book or a bad one. No judgment either way. The beach is one of the only places where a completely ridiculous novel is not only acceptable but recommended.

Your bikini, obviously. But the version you feel best in, not the one you bought optimistically three summers ago. String ties, a good fit, and a charm clipped on somewhere — center front, end of the ties, wherever it lands. It's a small thing that makes the whole look feel intentional, like you put yourself together on purpose even though you're literally just lying on the sand.

A coverup that works as a dress for dinner. The fewer outfit changes between beach and wherever you're eating, the better. Linen, something loose, a color that looks good sandy and also looks good at a table with a drink in your hand.

Waterproof jewelry you don't have to think about. The kind that goes in the ocean, dries in the sun, and still looks good at the end of the day. Gold that lives on you for the whole trip — not left in a hotel bathroom because you forgot to put it back on.

The beach weekend doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs the right things, packed with a little intention. Everything else works itself out once you're actually there, feet in the sand, not thinking about anything else for a few days.

That's the whole point.
